Flash Sites & Animations »

I began working with Flash in 2001 when it was at version 5. Since then I have continued to improve my Flash and ActionScript skills, growing into a Flash developer along the way. This section includes projects that I built entirely in Flash, such as website intros and clips, as well as standalone applications. Many of my websites also contain integrated Flash components.

SXSW Interactive Guide

April 2007

I created this Flash/Google Maps mashup for Austin360.com to help users search for and find SXSW 2007 events. The guide’s most interesting feature is its integration with Google Maps to plot event locations. Users can view event details and filter results based on event type, date, categories, artist, and venue. The database included over 300 events. I designed and implemented the guide within a week of its conception.

SoundCheck multimedia player

January 2007

The SoundCheck music and video player was my first big project as a Web Developer for the Austin American-Statesman. In addition to basic music and video playback features, it provides artist info and help sections. It also includes advanced filter, sort, search, and custom playlist capabilities. The player is entirely ActionScript-driven and interacts with a Python-based web framework (Django). Also, I designed the player to support the open-standards XML playlist format XSPF.

ginnymin : Flash version

February 2006

Early in 2006 I had a sudden urge to redo my site. With all the Flash tricks that I was learning as a Multimedia Developer at Darden, I decided to create it all in Flash. I wrote all of the ActionScript underlying the site’s layout and visual effects. The site content resided in a MySQL database, and I used PHP to pass the data into Flash.

Required Rate of Return

November 2005

I completed this project during my time at Darden. This Flash version is a redesign and upgrade of an existing Authorware version. It is a courseware module designed to help students learn or enhance their understanding of required rate of return.

Herb Kelleher

April 2005

Herb Kelleher and the Four Ps Toward High Performance was my first multimedia case at the Darden Business School. Professor Elliott Weiss dreamt up the “Spinning Pyramid of High Performance”, then I spent hours working through trigonometry and geometry equations to realize his vision. This project won the Wachovia Award for Excellence in Teaching Materials for the most innovative case in November 2005. (This is a preview of the case; the full version can be purchased from Darden Business Publishing.)

WhiteHouseTapes.org audio playback system

May 2003

During my Fourth year at UVA, I did an internship with Professor David Coleman at the Miller Center of Public Affairs. I was the first person to work on the technology underlying the White House Tapes project. I designed and built a Flash playback system for transcripts and digital recordings of White House audio tapes.

Being, Flash version

March 2003

After deciding to switch my personal website’s theme to “being is beautiful”, I first attempted this Flash-only interface. In the process, I learned many new Flash techniques. However, the idea of a 100% Flash website did not sustain itself, so this version never went live.

akdphi.org Flash intro

March 2003

I created a Flash intro when designing the new national website for alpha Kappa Delta Phi Sorority, Inc. Soon after it was launched, it became a big hit.

uvakdphi.com Flash intro

June 2002

The introduction to my sorority’s website was my first extensive Flash animation.
